Postcard of The Links,
Whitley
Bay, from a postcard published early
1900's, exact date unknown.
Published by Valentines.
Photograph of The Links
taken in June
2007. The main change is the
WWI war memorial. Obviously the original postcard was taken
before
this was built.

Another
postcard of the Links, actually the same photograph as the sepia one
but this one has been colourized and the cenotaph added! It's
hard to see whether the cenotaph is a photograph or has been painted
in.
Why not take another photograph? Again published by
Valentines and posted in 1937. |
A photograph of the
links taken in June 2007 for comparison. |

| Yet another version of
this Valentines card, this time minus the war memorial but including a
helter skelter. |

Postcard
of the Beach and North Promenade with Spanish City in the background.
Published 1950's (?) by M and L National Series.
Photograph taken in June
2007. Absence of people probably due to the time of year.

| Postcard
of The Promenade with the Waverley (?) Hotel in the background.
Published 1920's/30's (?). Publisher unknown. |
Photograph taken in June
2007. Hotel name now changed to the Rex. |

| Postcard
of "The Village", Whitley Bay, published in the A & G
Taylor "Orthocrhome" series. Not posted but looks early 20th
century. States "by appointment to her late Majesty", presumably
referring to Queen Victoria, who died in January 1901. |
Photograph
taken in 2008 from a similar viewpoint. Many of the buildings
still exist, including the building at the right, which was until
recently a Co-oP store but is now closed. |

| Postcard
of "Arcadia", Whitley Bay, unknown publisher but postmarked March
24th., 1906. Arcadia is the name of the east part of Whitley
Road, between Whitley Bay and Cullercoats. |
Photograph
of Arcadia taken in October 2008. Unfortunately the mobile home
obscures part of the view. The inset photograph shows a plaque on
the wall of the first building on the right, commemorating construction
in 1899. |

| Postcard
of the Panama Gardens Whitley Bay although described here as The Links.
Published by R.A. Postcards and postmarked September 1952. |
Photograph
from a similar viewpoint taken in March 2009. In the distance,
the dome of the Spanish City has scaffolding related to current
refurbishment. |

| Real
photograph postcards often reveal interesting detail when enlarged.
Here is some detail from the above postcard. Those were the
days! |

More detail. |
